Abstract

Septian Indra Nezarudin, 2021. Application of Constructed Wetland in Reducing
COD, BOD and Increasing DO Levels in Domestic Wastewater, Study Program:
Environmental Engineering, Universitas PGRI Adibuana Surabaya.
Lecture Advisor : Drs. Pungut, ST, MT.
Increasing the quantity of domestic wastewater in residential areas
without improving the quality of receiving water bodies, causes pollution to water
bodies due to the quantity of wastewater that is not treated before entering the
water body. One suitable technology in treating domestic liquid waste is
Constructed Wetland by utilizing water jasmine and bamboo water plants using
gravel media, which can reduce pollutant levels in domestic liquid waste. The
purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of Constructed Wetland
Technology in reducing COD, BOD and DO levels in domestic liquid waste
housing in the Menganti area, Gresik. Methods Laboratory scale research was
carried out using a batch system using a reactor made of a plastic box measuring
0.85 x 0.40 x 0.30 m (l x w x h). The variables in this study used different types of
plants, namely reactor 1; water jasmine plant, reactor 2; water bamboo plant,
reactor 3; water jasmine and bamboo water plants with the same number of
plants in each reactor containing 6 plants, using a height of 20 cm gravel planting
media using a continuous system, the flow rate is 0.0040 m3
/hour with a residence
time of 12 hours. The processing is carried out by taking 3 samples every 12
hours. After processing, there was a decrease and increase in efficiency in
Reactor 1 (Jasmine Air), the average efficiency of COD levels was 36% or 61.2
mg/L, BOD was 40% or 30 mg/L and increased DO was 62 % or 3.8 mg/L.
Reactor 2 (Bamboo water), the average efficiency of COD levels is 38% or 57.8
mg/L, BOD is 41% or 28.3 mg/L and an increase in DO is 63% or 4 mg/L.
Meanwhile, in Reactor 3 (Jasmine Water and Bamboo Water), the average
efficiency of COD levels is 19% or 76.7 mg/L, BOD is 24% or 38 mg/L and an
increase in DO is 60% or 3.6 mg/L.
Keywords: Domestic Wastewater, Constructed Wetland, COD, BOD, DO, Water
Jasmine, Water Bamboo.
