Abstract

This research objectives are to describe how the Minke’s identities are represented in Pramoedya A. Toer on This Earth of Mankind that practice crisis identity and to explain the impacts of Minke's crisis identity in Pramoedya A. Toer in This Earth of Mankind in which Minke changes his culture, education, and perception. The background of this research discusses about crisis identity of the main character in a novel This Earth of Mankind by Pramoedya A. Toer, United Stated of America (1996). There are 2 research questions as follow: how is the identity of Minke described in Pramoedya A. Toer on This Earth of Mankind? and what are the impacts of Minke’s crisis identities in Pramoedya A. Toer on This Earth of Mankind? This research used documentation method by applying mimetic approach and was supported by triangulation among Homi K. Bhabha (1994), Robert J. C. Young (2001), and Bill Ashcroft et.al (2007). Data analysis of this research was done by selecting case, classifying quotations, analysing the data, and making conclusion from the phrases, utterances, and sentences of the novel This Earth of Mankind (1996). The results of the research showed that Minke’s crisis identity was reflected by practicing mimicry, hybridity, and ambivalence. The impacts of Minke’s crisis identity covered losing his identity, getting many affronts, using a foreign language, wearing a set of western clothes, and willing to leave his family. There are some suggestions by the researcher actually for pedagogical implication and further research. For the pedagogical implication this research can be used to apply in reading comprehension subject, especially in the crisis identity area of some characters in This Earth of Mankind. It can be used to identify the characterization of the characters in This Earth of Mankind in reading comprehension subject. For the further research, the researcher hopes that the next researcher still analyze This Earth of Mankind novel more deeply about crisis identity and the impacts of crisis identity. The further researchers are going to be interested in using the same topic and cover the deficiency of the research.
