Abstract
The present study was intended to figure out: (1) whether or not there was a significant difference between the students’ thinking skills and their achievement in the making of algorithm program using the problem-based learning and one using the conventional model of learning in the course of Computer I (Programming),(2)the effectiveness of the problem-based learning in that course. The population of the study was 124 students of A, B, C classes of 2006.
The subjects taking part in the study were 22 students of A class and 21 students of B class that were assigned by using the random sampling. The research design employed in the study was the pretest-post test design. The control group was B class taught using the conventional model of learning, whereas the experimental group was A class taught using the problem-based learning. The study started with the development of the aids of the problem-based learning.
The research findings showed that there was a significant difference between the students’ thinking skills and their achievement in the making of algorithm program using the problem-based learning and one using the conventional model of learning in the course of Computer I (Programming). In addition, the problem- based learning in that course proved to be effective.
