Abstract

This research aims at exploring the challenges of Javanese teachers’ experiences on Chinese-Indonesian students in English Language Teaching. Both cultures require intercultural competence which is the composite of knowledge, attitude, skill and understanding adjusted through intercultural activities. This study uses qualitative method with narrative approach. The data in this study are statements from interview session which is done by two Javanese teachers in RK course as data source. Then, the data are analysed by using thematic. This study delivers three challenges as the result. First challenge comes from rich Chinese-Indonesian family. By good economic level, the parents have high expectation toward their children so that they directly and indirectly demand the teachers to give the best teaching and help their children to be successful in English without understanding their children’s abilities. Secondly, split of mother language becomes a challenge as well because Chinese-Indonesian students get used to using Hokkian or Mandarin language in daily. Javanese teachers use other languages so that teachers and students often get misunderstanding and misinterpreting on explained lesson. The last challenge is high work ethic from Chinese-Indonesian people. It also becomes their culture feature and teachers must be able to adjust with their habit and character such as discipline, quick, big curiosity, and mastering various skills since they are child.
