Abstract

This paper aims at giving the examining of extrinsic factors towards EFL students’ motivation in blended learning. In learning English, the external factors should not be disregarded because they may play a major impact in the process. A qualitative case study is carried out in order to excavate extrinsic factors on students’ motivation and the information is gathered through semi-structured interviews and focus group discussion (FGD) of 12 (twelve) students from a whole classroom. Both interviews and FGD demonstrated that the participants referred to various extrinsic factors which are less motivated in the blended learning process including dissatisfaction with the teaching issue, a lack of course materials and learning media, the role of classmates, parental guidance, and as well as situational problems like distraction and internet connectivity. It can be concluded that students are more motivated when they can interact with and learn from one another in the classroom setting as important as intrinsic factors. It is also suggested that teachers should be more supportive and creative in directing their students regardless of whether they are using traditional or virtual learning.
