Abstract
Many students have difficulty in learning vocabulary because
of the large number of vocabulary they have to memorize. At the same time, the way teachers teach is very outdated and unattractive because of the teacher’s inability to use innovative learning media. The purpose of the research was to found out how students’ perceptions of using Indonesian folklore movies in learning vocabulary. This study was conducted at SMPN 48 Surabaya while the participants are fourteen eighth-grade students. This research used qualitative case study and thematic approach to analyze the data. The main instruments used in the data collection was interview and assisted by observation. The findings of the study revealed that folklore movie increased students’ interest and motivation in learning vocabulary. Besides, folklore movie also provided audio-visuals that make them feel more enthusiastic because they depict real events, allowing students to imagine more. Moreover, the students agreed that folklore movies were useful to learned some new words and improved their vocabulary learning.
